Matthew Tozer currently resides in London, Ontario where he works as a freelance composer, sessional instructor and operates a private studio. He holds a PhD in Music Composition from the University of Western Ontario. He is an associate member of the CECCMC, CLC and a member of ORMTA. His dissertation involved the hybridization of the traditional baroque dance movements with the classical concerto featuring the 17th century instrument, the Viola da Gamba in combination with the string orchestra. Matthew is also an advocate of strong music education and has participated in many university level instructional courses, evident in his teaching.

Matthew Tozer is currently at work on a trumpet trio piece, and a song cycle for premiere in 2017. His most recent performances include Strange, Marvelous, Quirky, Eerie & Intense premiered by the Mivos Quartet, fingers premiered by TorQ Percussion, Imitation is the Most Sincerest Form of Flattery premiered by the Toy Piano Composers, Artitu-tack and Rack and Pinion performed by the Pittsburgh Performance Innovation Ensemble, Slips and Slopes and Ripe performed by the Bozzini String Quartet, his opera All That Glitters as part of Opera from Scratch 2015, and Terminal for piano, soprano and french horn as part of the Irish Composers Summer School. Other noteworthy performances include Athena and Zeus, for cello, piano and tenor by the Erato Ensemble, Dendritic Streams, a piece for a double string quartet made up of a combination of western and eastern strings as part of the Atlas Ensembles Summer Academy in Amsterdam, Moods for bass clarinet and flute as part of the 2014 Charlotte New Music Festival. Past performances include his string quartet Affinity as part of the New Music Edmonton Now Hear This Festival 2014, Syllabical performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Six Vignettes performed by the International Low Brass Trio, Contemplation on Dawn for Piano, Cello and Flute as part of the Orford Festival 2013, Affinity for String quartet as part of the highSCORE New Music Festival 2013 in Pavia Italy, and Athena and Zeus as part of the Vancouver International Song Institute’s 2013 Art Song Lab.

Matthew is actively involved in the creation of new work through the collaborative process. His compositions have been work-shopped and/or performed by organizations and groups such as: TorQ Percussion, Pittsburgh Performance Innovation, Toy Piano Composers, The Bozzini String Quartet, The Erato Ensemble, The Atlas Ensemble, Charlotte New Music Festival, The International Low Brass Trio, The Strathcona Quartet, The Vancouver Chamber Choir, The Aventa Ensemble, The Vancouver International Song Institute, Soundstreams Canada, The Canadian Contemporary Music Workshop, The Madawaksa String Quartet, the National Arts Centre Summer Music Institute, Toronto Chamber Opera Productions, Pacific Opera Victoria, The Kindred Spirits Orchestra and other various ensembles.


Matthew Tozer holds a PhD in Music from the University of Western Ontario and was named Runner up in the London Community News 2015 Reader’s Choice Awards for Music Schools
